How to Use the Word Unscrambler

Our word unscrambler turns a jumble of letters into every word you can spell with them. Type your letters into the box at the top of the page and press Unscramble — in a fraction of a second the tool compares your letters against a dictionary of over 168,000 English words and lists every valid answer, sorted from the longest words down to two-letter plays. If you have a blank tile in Scrabble or a wildcard in Words With Friends, type a question mark (?) in its place and it will stand in for any letter. Results are drawn from a curated English word list of over 168,000 entries based on the ENABLE lexicon — the open dictionary family used by Words With Friends.

Say you're holding the rack PLAYER. Enter those six letters and you'll immediately see the six-letter words PARLEY, PEARLY, PLAYER and REPLAY, followed by five-letter options such as PALER, LAYER and PEARL, and shorter words all the way down to handy two-letter tiles. Because the results are grouped by length, you can quickly spot the highest-scoring play or the short word that fits a tight spot on the board.

Which tool should you use?

This page includes four related tools, each suited to a different situation:

Word Unscrambler — the main tool. Best when you have a set of loose letters (a Scrabble rack, Text Twist letters, or a Jumble) and want every word they can make.
Word Finder — use this when you already know some of the letters and their positions. Enter a pattern with ? for the gaps, such as A?PLE, and it returns matching words like APPLE and AMPLE. It's ideal for crosswords and for filling a known pattern on the board.

Word Game Strategy: How to Score More Points

Finding valid words is only half the game — where and when you play them decides who wins. These tips apply to Scrabble, Words With Friends and most tile-based word games:

Learn the two-letter words. Short words like JO, XU, EX, OX and AX let you play parallel to existing tiles and hook onto them for surprising points. Memorising the full list of valid two-letter words is the single highest-value thing most players can do.
Save an S and a blank. An S can pluralise a word already on the board while building a new word across it, often scoring in two directions at once. Blanks are worth zero points but can complete a seven-tile play for a big bonus.
Aim for bingos. Using all seven of your tiles in a single turn earns a 50-point bonus in Scrabble (35 in Words With Friends). Endings such as -IER, -IEST, -ING and -TION are bingo-friendly; feed your whole rack into the unscrambler above to spot seven-letter answers.
Dump awkward letters early. Q, Z, X and J are worth a lot but clog your rack. Play them on premium squares when you can, and keep a healthy balance of vowels and consonants so you always have options.
Play the board, not just the word. A short word on a triple-letter or triple-word square often beats a long word on plain tiles. When you are ahead, block your opponent's access to those premium squares.

Scrabble and Words With Friends Tile Values

Knowing what each letter is worth helps you decide which words to play. Standard Scrabble tile values are:

1 point — A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R
2 points — D, G
3 points — B, C, M, P
4 points — F, H, V, W, Y
5 points — K
8 points — J, X
10 points — Q, Z

Which dictionary do you use?

Our results are based on the ENABLE word list (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon) — a widely used, openly available dictionary of about 168,000 words that forms the basis of the lexicon used by Words With Friends. We chose it because it contains real, playable words rather than obscure or invalid junk entries. Because different games use different official dictionaries — the Scrabble TWL and Collins (SOWPODS) lists both differ slightly, and each adds newer words such as QI and ZA — always confirm a word in your specific game if a challenge is on the line.

Is my data private?

Completely. The dictionary is downloaded to your browser once, and every lookup then happens on your own device. The letters you type are never sent to our servers or stored anywhere.

Can I unscramble a long word or phrase?

You can enter up to 15 letters at a time, which covers any standard tile rack and most long words. For a phrase, remove the spaces and enter the letters together.
